How do you handle these cases? He has just updated to R17 and certainly got a free plugin key. So he could continue using the plugin software.

I definetly do NOT give the new license key to the "old" user so he can pass it the new one. I always request the data (name,address,email) of the new license holder and contact that one myself to confirm the purchase and his c4d serial number digits. Only then I report back to the "old" customer to officially confirm the transfer success and then point him to the section in the EULA.
I guess you have to trust the customer after that..
