--------- If I need to shoot more than one ray in a reflection or transparency shader, do I need to build a volume shader or could I get away with a 2d shader?
Could I make use of the matte effect where multiple rays are shot, or is that on top of the underlaying shader?
Thanks for any hints!

you can shoot as many as you want. Just call TraceColor for all the rays and sum up the result as you like
