An SDK usually represents a framework or toolkit of data structures and functions that can be used to create, enhance, or extend an application or be used for specific purposes (hardware SDKs, for instance).
I guess the general purpose of an SDK is to allow the answering of questions like, "How do I make this more automatic?" or "Can I do this even though it is not supported?".
