I doubt there is an analytical solution to your problem, you'll have to go with some kind of numerical estimation anyway. The best is probably to use the Line Segments generated from the Spline anyway, because otherwise you won't be able to include any effects that come from deformation. Intersection of Line Segments with Spheres should be pretty simple again.
