How do I add a format to the list offered on the Render Settings Save panel?
I need some projection and depth data as well as the rgb channel, so I think I need to use a VideoPost plugin to gather that data.
A BitmapSaver plugin looks like it could be what I want to do the file writing, but I'd need to determine whether my VideoPost plugin was enabled (or ideally add it automatically), and to associate the data it collects with the right bitmap, particularly if I'm rendering a sequence, so that I save the right data and discard it as soon as possible.

BitmapSaverData is the one to use. (See the BFF example.)
But that hook is very primitive. You won't be able to check for videoposts. Perhaps you could do it the other way, making the video post (or a scene hook) automatically change the file format.
I'm not sure that a custom file format is the way to go. Couldn't you add custom buffers to the exisiting multi-pass architecture?
